Nearby Keauhou Bay is home to sailing snorkeling adventures on the Fair Wind (www.fair-wind.com) and rafting/snorkeling adventures with Sea Quest Rafters (www.sequesthawaii.com). Also nearby is Adventurers in Paradise: Sea Kayaks and Snorkeling in Hawaii (www.bigislandkayak.com). Not so close by, but also offering special experiences of the Big Island is Hawaii Forest and Trail (www.hawaii-forest.com).There is excellent shopping (including a well-stocked KTA grocery) at the Keauhou Shopping Center. You can catch the latest movies at the 8-theater Keauhou Cinema. The 36-hole Kona Country Club surrounds the Kanaloa site (www.golfkona.com).
Going South from Kanaloa, you quickly reach the Kona coffee country, small towns with great cafes and unique galleries and shops (the galleries in Kainaliu are worth a stop), Kealakekua Bay, the Place of Refuge Puâuhonua O Honaunau (www.nps.gov/puho/) South Point, and Volcanoes National Park (www.nps.gov/havo/). Going North from Kanaloa, there is the main city of Kailua-Kona with a variety of restaurants, bars, shops, and historical sites (including a 24-hour Safeway for groceries at odd hours (we highly recommend O’s Bistro near the Safeway for breakfast, lunch, or dinner), and a nice selection of island music at the Borders book store); the fishing and charter boat harbor of Honokohau (Click Here for a Yahoo! search), the airport, the resorts and golf courses of the Kohala coast, and if your turn east through Waimea - the waterfalls and gardens of the rainy side of the island. If you proceed north through the Kohala Coast you reach the north end of the island and the towns of Hawi and Kapa’au. Both have very good cafes and galleries. If you head this way, don’t miss the Kohala Book Shop in Kapa’au (www.kohalabooks.big808.com).
The Big Island offers an abundance of things to do. There are beaches, snorkeling, diving, deep sea fishing, parasailing, rafting, kayaking, sailing, whale watching, golfing, horseback riding, helicopter tours, hiking, biking, luau shows, gyms, spas, and massages.
